North Oldham vs. Shelby County

Score: 83-70 Shelby County.

When: March 4.

Where: Henry County High School.

Key players: North Oldham’s Alex Foley and Max Steinfeld. Shelby County’s Donovan Johnson, Boomer Beckley Darryl Hicks and Cache Tomlinson.

Game highlights: With the score tied at 13, the Rockets took off on a 13-1 scoring run and never let the Mustangs back into the game. Guard Cache Tomlinson started the run with a three-pointer followed by six points from freshman Darryl Hicks and four from reserve Tavis Elzy.

NOHS tried to make a final run in the second half cutting the lead to 42-33 on a shot from Max Steinfeld who led the Mustangs with 25 points. Shelby, however, went on an 11-0 scoring run to put NOHS away for good. Senior forward Donovan Johnson, who led the Rockets with 24 points, scored six points during the run including an electrifying alley-oop dunk off a pass from Boomer Beckley.

Shelby’s defense and size also played a key role as the Rockets limited NOHS’ leading scorer Alex Foley to zero points in the first.

Foley came back strong in the second half to score 16 points.

Shelby also shut down 6-foot-7 sophomore Devon Rowan holding him to 11 points. Rowan fouled out early in the fourth quarter after battling the Rockets deep and big interior players.

Shelby put four players in double figures including 21 from Hicks, 13 from Beckley and 12 from Tomlinson.

NOHS ended the year with a 12-16 record.

South Oldham vs. Anderson County

Score: 61-48 South Oldham.

When: March 3.

Where: Henry County High School.

Key players: SOHS’ Brice Jewett and Casey Jackson. Anderson County’s Jacob Russell.

Game highlights: The Dragons used a pair of scoring runs, one in the first half and one in the second and then held off the Bearcats from the foul line to win their Eighth Region tourney opener.

SOHS’ first run came midway through the second period with the score tied at 16. Point guard Austin Bowling started it with a three-pointer off the right wing. Brice Jewett followed that with a steal and layup on the ensuing possession. He was fouled on the play and hit the free throw to put the Dragons up 22-16. Forward Carson Fields closed the 9-0 run with a three off the left wing to put SOHS up 25-16 forcing an Anderson timeout with 3:06 left in the first half.

Anderson closed to within 26-21 by the end of the half.

The Bearcats made a final run at the Dragons late in the third quarter when a three-point play from Jacob Russell cut the SOHS lead to 31-28 with 2:17 left. Russell led all scorers with 22 points.

SOHS, however, answered quickly when Fields hit a follow shot followed by a three-pointer from the right corner from Casey Jackson. Jackson, who tied Jewett for team-high scoring honors with 16 points, closed the period with a spinning six-footer in the lane that put SOHS up 38-28 heading into the fourth quarter.

SOHS hit 10 of 11 from the foul line in the fourth quarter to ice the win.

Oldham County vs. Anderson County

Score: 67-55 Anderson County.

When: March  2.

Where: Simon Kenton High School.

Key players: OCHS’ Emily Lape and Leah Pehlke. Anderson County’s Kara Yeaste and Eriel McKee.

Game highlights: The Lady Colonels got off to a horrible offensive start with just three points in the first quarter and never recovered.

After falling behind 11-3 in the first quarter, OCHS trailed 28-16 at the end the first half and never got any closer than 10 points the rest of the way. Anderson County was led by Kara Yeaste’s 22 points while freshman Eriel McKee scored 16. Sophomore center Sydney Brown had 11 points and 15 rebounds,

The Lady Colonels were led by senior forwards Emily Lape and Leah Pehlke. Lape scored a team-high 19 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter while Pehlke had 13 points and a pair of three-pointers. Ericka Hardin had 10 for the Lady Colonels. OCHS finished the year with a 13-15 record under first-year coach Steve Mullins.
