South Oldham vs. Eastern

Score: 28-21 Eastern (overtime).

When: Friday.

Where: Oldham County Kickoff Classic, South Oldham High School.

Key players: South Oldham’s Jay Gatto, Brandon Kollenberg and Cody Malone. Eastern’s Jon Davis, Josh Hayden and Mike Jenkins.

Game highlights: A 7-0 South Oldham lead in a defensive struggle evaporated in the final 7:10 of the game when the two teams combined to score 35 points.

SOHS gained the 7-0 lead midway through the second quarter when Jay Gatto picked off a Brent Carneal pass and returned it 31 yards for a touchdown.

Gatto was named SOHS’ defensive MVP for the game.

The score stayed there until the midway point of the fourth quarter when Eastern tied the game after Carneal found Josh Hayden streaking down the right sideline alone for a 51-yard scoring pass. Eastern forced an SOHS punt on the next series and came right back to grab the lead.

On the second play from scrimmage, Mike Jenkins took a handoff up the middle for a 43- yard scoring run that put the Eagles up 14-7. Eastern’s defense turned the trick again when Joe Kenn intercepted SOHS’ Peyton Meek on the first play from scrimmage giving the Eagles the ball at the 50.

After three runs netted 25 yards for the Eagles, Carneal hit Max Morten with a 25-yard scoring pass to put the Eagles up 21-7.

The Dragons came right back on the next series. Starting from their own 25, Meek hit R.J. Graziul and Cody Malone with passes good for 32 yards. Tailback Brandon Kollenberg, who was named the Dragons’ offensive MVP for the game, put the Dragons in scoring position with a 37-yard reverse around right end.

Two plays later, Meek hit Gatto over the middle with an eight yard scoring pass to cut the Eastern lead to 21-14 with 1:11 left in the game.

The Dragons’ special teams came up big when SOHS recovered an onside kick on the 50.

On second down, Meek and Malone connected on a long pass for 45 yards to the Eastern one yard line.

Three plays later, Meek scrambled over to tie the game with nine seconds left.

Eastern got the lead right back on the first play in overtime when Jenkins went right up the middle for a 10 yard score.

SOHS overtime possession resulted in the two teams trading penalties before a Meek pass got through the hands of Malone on fourth down giving the Eagles the win.

“One thing I was very proud of was we didn’t revert back to not trying to fight back,” SOHS coach Clay Holbrook said. “I don’t mean to say we ever quit, but there were times last year when we could not have pulled ourselves back into a game like this and they proved they have that ability in this game.”

North Oldham vs. Shawnee

Score: 41-14 North Oldham.

When: Saturday.

Where: Oldham County Kickoff Classic, South Oldham High School.

Key players: North Oldham’s Chase Maddox, John Alward, Andrew Tuller, Alex Miller and Ryan Anderson.

Game highlights: The Mustangs got their season started on the right foot by building a 20-0 first period lead with a strong running game and opportunistic defense.

NOHS scored on the game’s first possession on an eight-play, 52-yard drive capped by a seven yard scoring run from John Alward.

After losing a fumble on their second possession, the Mustangs caught a break when a bad punt snap left NOHS with the ball on the Shawnee five. Jerrett Link took it over on the first play for a 13-0 lead.

NOHS scored on its next possession when quarterback Chase Maddox hit Alward with screen over the middle.

Alward burst through a pair of Shawnee tacklers, then rolled off a devastating block from guard Ryan Anderson for a 30-yard scoring run.

“It was a good start for the game and the way we got going right off the bat,” NOHS coach Billy Martin said. “We fizzled a little bit later on, but it’s always good to get that first win.”

NOHS kept rolling in the second period scoring on its second possession when Andrew Tuller, the Mustangs’s offensive MVP, took a screen up the middle 45 yards for a score.

Maddox and Zach Evans added short scoring runs in the second half as Martin went to the bench early in the half.

NOHS showed a balanced running game with five running backs gaining 35 yards or more, Tuller led the way with 50 yards.

Maddox was nine for 11 passing for 100 yards and a pair of scores in his first varsity start.

“Chase was pretty efficient out there,” Martin said. “Other than the fumble and an interception, he had a really great game for the first time out of the gate at the varsity level. He’s pretty level headed and it showed.”

The Mustangs’ defense, led by MVP Spencer Gooch from middle linebacker, limited Shawnee to a pair of long scoring runs and kept the Golden Eagles from any sustained drives.

Oldham County vs. Iroquois

Score: 67-6 Oldham County.

When: Saturday.

Where: Oldham County Kickoff Classic, South Oldham High School.

Key players: Oldham County’s Chad Dennis, Austin Middaugh, Joel Cuebas, Ichiro Chiba and Dy’Lan Underwood.

Game highlights: This one was never in doubt as the Colonels scored 27 points in the first period.

The Colonels scored on the first series when Chad Dennis hit Austin Middaugh with a 28-yard scoring pass. Two series later, the OCHS defense made it 13-0 when Kiley O’bradovich returned an interception nine yards for a score.

OCHS made it 20-0 on the next possession after recovering an onside kick at the Iroquois 48. A Dennis to Chase Hamby pass for 33 yards put the ball on the five where Dy’Lan Underwood took it over on the next play.

OCHS’ defense made it 27-0 just before the first period ended when Joel Cuebas picked off a pass and returned it 37-yards for a score.

The Colonels scored two more times in the second period, on four yard run from Underwood and a one-yard plunge from Dennis. Underwood opened the second half with a 65-yard scoring run before the Colonels called off the dogs.

Hamby went on to score on a 64-yard run and Brett Leary scored on runs of 63- and 16-yards.

Dennis was named the Colonels’ offensive MVP after completing 10 of 16 passes for 165 yards. Middle linebacker Ichiro Chiba was the defensive MVP leading an effort that limited Iroquois to just two first downs and 16 total yards of offense.

Oldham County vs. North Oldham

Score: 2-1 North Oldham.

When: Aug. 28.

Where: North Oldham High School.

Key players: Oldham County’s Mike Farrow. North Oldham’s Andy Carroll, Paul Althoff and Brandon Cosby.

Game highlights: The Mustangs scored the upset over the sixth-ranked Colonels and ended a four-year losing streak to OCHS with this win.

“This is the way we should be playing,” NOHS coach Alan Morel said. “It’s important to the boys that they win and stop the streak, but it’s more important that this should give them an indication of how good they are.”

Senior defender Paul Althoff scored the game-winning goal with just over six minutes left after making a long run down the left sideline.

Althoff gained control of the ball just enough after a scramble to punch in the shot for the winner.

The Mustangs took the lead with 22:58 left in the first half when Andy Carroll hit in a long header from the left side of the box off a pass from Brandon Cosby.

That held for six minutes until the Colonels were able to tie it off a free kick from Mike Farrow that hooked in just under the top bar of the goal.
