Fatal I-71 crash occurs when driver reaches for phone

The Latest: A Carrollton woman is dead after a crash on I-71 near La Grange on Jan. 15.

According to police, a 1993 Chevy Cavalier traveling south on I-71 left the roadway, traveled a short distance and overturned and struck a rock embankment shortly before 5 p.m.

The driver, Thelma Works, 50, of Carrollton, told police she dropped her cell phone while behind the wheel and lost control of the vehicle when she reached to pick it up. 

Works and a passenger, Melinda J. Neal, 50, also of Carrollton, were ejected from the vehicle. Both were transported to University Hospital in Louisville, where Neal was pronounced dead. 

Another passenger, Robert J. Parker, 22, of Brooksville, Fla., was treated for minor injuries. 

None of the occupants were wearing seat belts. 

Oldham County Police request that anyone with information about the crash call 222-1300.
