Dynamite debaters

Students from North Oldham and South Oldham high schools competed Sept. 27 at Fern Creek High School for a debate tournament in Lincoln-Douglas Debate.

The NOHS team, Nick Bonomo, Doug Bonomo, Josh Rosenberg, Andy Kangpan, Seth Tompkins, and Cade Friedland, scored either 4-0 or 3-1 for the day with Kangpan participating in a final round in varsity debate. He came in second in a 2-1 decision, and Nick Bonomo took first place in the novice division.

Nick and Doug Bonomo, Tompkins and Friedland are novice debaters – first year debaters regardless of their grade level. Friedland is a freshman, the others are seniors. Rosenberg and Kangpan are seasoned veterans in debate and are in the varsity division. Friedland’s parents, John and Suzanne, accompanied the debate team as did former debater Trey Fletcher.

Nick Bonomo accepted his first place trophy from Dr. J. W. Patterson of the University of Kentucky. Kangpan accepted his second place win from Patterson.

The SOHS team, Austin Sipp, Adam Farr, Bryce Barrett, Audrey Keller, Rachel Pardee, Sydney Hood, Alyssa Hendricks, Jasmine Riddlesberger, Jordan Yarberry, Lucy Sipp, Beavin Brumfield, Alexis Miller, Angela Brown, Nicole Brown, Ally Badinger, Jacklyn Mattingly and Linda Grijalba, pictured at top, is coached by Michael Slider.

SOHS had several award winners at the debate, above center, Lucy Sipp won best speaker in the novice division; Ally Badinger was undefeated, earning runner-up, best overall debater in the novice division; Nicole Brown was runner up, best overall speaker in the varsity division; and Ian Akers was undefeated, earning best overall debater in the varsity division.
