South Oldham’s girls have hosted the Lady Dragon Invitational for a few years now, but there wasn’t an equivalent tournament on the boys side.
That will change this weekend when the Dragons host the John Fendley Classic in Crestwood.
Play will start at 2 p.m. Thursday and will continue through Saturday night.
“We’ve never had a boys tournament here before,” coach Steve Simpson said. “Some of the parents were interested in getting some more home games, so we asked some people to raise some money and they did.”
The tournament will feature South, North Oldham, Jeffersontown, Ryle, Christian Academy-Louisville, Eastern, South Warren and Franklin County.
Each team will be guaranteed three games, using winners’ and losers’ brackets.
North will begin play at 4 p.m. Thursday vs. Eastern, while South will take on CAL at 8.
“One of the things that the sponsors asked us was that we get good teams that would bring good crowds,” Simpson said. “I think we’ve gotten that.
“There’s no ranked teams, but it may be one of the best top-to-bottom tournaments in this area.”
The tournament is named after John Fendley, a former county attorney and loyal South basketball fan who passed away in recent years.
The plan is to name each season’s tournament after a different person that was important in the South community, Simpson said.
“I think anyone in the top half (of the bracket) can win it and I think anyone in the bottom half can,” Simpson said. “It’ll be a real good tournament.”
