Steve Greenwell is Oldham County government’s biggest loser.
During the last eight weeks, the already svelte magistrate dropped 26 pounds – from 175 to 149 pounds – to lose the highest percentage of weight and win a weight-loss competition among county
Greenwell said he felt like joining the contest for the sake of encouraging others, but when other employees started telling him he couldn’t win it, “that just threw gas on the fire.”
He said he lost his weight mostly by cutting back on portions and paying attention to food labels.
The runner-up was Oldham County Chief Deputy Jailer Mike Turner. He said he dropped from 213 pounds to 186, after starting a week into the program. He joked that a diet of Slim- Fast for two weeks left him so weak he could barely step on the scales.
In the last week of the competition, Turner’s wife baked a chocolate pie and sent it to his chief competitor — Greenwell. On the same day, Turner said he saw a Big Mac appear mysteriously in his office.
Greenwell said with Turner closing in on him, the last week of competition just about killed him as he resolved to lose five pounds in one week, and started skipping some meals.
Oldham County Fiscal Court recognized the losers/winners with an award and a joke or two, but Judge-Executive Duane Murner said the competition had serious goals — to improve the health of county employees and to reduce the cost of insurance to the county.
