Students from Angela Hicks’ fifth-grade class at Crestwood Elementary joined more than 1,200 protesters at the state capitol at a rally in favor of House Bill 164, the so-called “Stream Saver Bill,” Feb. 14. The students have studied Appalachian culture – including coal mining – and chose to support the bill, which seeks to protect Appalachian headwaters from pollution caused by mountain top removal coal mining. The students learned of the rally and planned the trip, including scheduling buses, Hicks said.Students met with State Sen.
