MIDDLETOWN – It was a fine day for the Oldham County High School wrestling team Saturday.
The Colonels took the Region V team title with five individual champions on a day highlighted by junior Cody Bishop’s 13-10 upset of Joe Rupp at 140 pounds.
Appropriately enough, Bishop used a move called the “Tootsie Roll” to secure the win over Rupp and give the Colonels the extra push they needed to win their second regional crown in the last three years.
“I got points on it for a near fall and that was the difference,” Bishop said. “It’s called the Tootsie Roll. I got my arms and hands on his elbow and one inside his knee and just rolled with him.”
Bishop, who missed last year’s regional with an injury, is a state powerlifting champion at 148 pounds and used his strength to control Rupp late in the match. He said he was confident going into the finals.
“Coach told us if we didn’t believe we were going to win then we wouldn’t win,” Bishop said. “I went out there thinking I was going to win.”
Bishop’s title was a plus for the Colonels who qualified all 13 wrestlers for the state meet which begins today, Thursday, at the Frankfort Civic Center and ends Saturday.
“Cody went above and beyond what he was supposed to do for us today and we had several kids do that,” OCHS coach Aaron Riordan said. “We had some young guys step up too. The best thing is we are taking the entire team to the state meet.”
Also taking titles for the Colonels were freshman Conner Wilkerson at 103 pounds, eighth-grader John Shirkey at 112, junior Tyler Kaelin at 125 and sophomore Mikey Caudill at heavyweight.
Kaelin will enter the state ranked No. 2 in the state.
Another plus for the Colonels was the performance of freshman Weston Clark at 189 pounds. Clark was a last minute replacement for injured senior Zach Gnadinger and took fourth in the region to qualify.
“He stepped right in for us and did a great job,” Riordan said.
North Oldham also had a solid day as the Mustangs took third place as a team led by individual titles from Chase Rusch at 160 pounds, Larry Hinkle at 152 and Mitch Rusch at 119.
Chase Rusch, a junior, was named the meet’s outstanding wrestler by the coaches (see sidebar on B2).
Hinkle, a senior, also took his first regional title and will enter the state meet with just one loss. NOHS had five wrestlers finish as regional runner-up to give them eight competing in the state meet.
South Oldham’s Roy Bisenius led the Dragons’ contingent taking the title at 130 pounds with a hard fought finals win over Loren Avera of NOHS. Bisenius, a junior who is ranked No. 4 in the state, will compete in his third state meet and posted a 12-0 record against regional opponents this year.
Senior Cole Proctor took second at 145 pounds for SOHS and will also be competing in his third state meet. Proctor is ranked No. 5 in the state. The Dragons will send five wrestlers to the state meet.
