Story by BILLY RUTLEDGE
With three minutes left in overtime in the biggest game of their season, the Oldham County boys’ soccer team delivered, scoring a long goal to put them into the region final with a 2-1 win over Simon Kenton.
Junior Brendan Scott ended the game with one swift kick from about 30 yards out into the lower right hand corner of the goal.
Oldham County dominated the first half, controlling the game and putting the first goal on the scoreboard from senior Jared Kemper just 25 minutes in. They went into the half confident but Simon Kenton would not let the Colonels go easily as they tied the game with 20 minutes left and forced the game into overtime.
The Pioneers crowd made their presence felt, bringing drums, air horns, loud speakers and cowbells and playing them nonstop to show their support. But the phenomenal play of the Pioneers and the loud crowd was not enough to phase the Colonels as they won on the overtime goal from Scott.
Oldham County now advances to the 8th Region final against rival South Oldham.
Both of these teams met in the district final and South won in penalty kicks, but this time, the Colonels are more confident and are ready to put the season on the line for a shot at the state tournament. Winner goes on and loser goes home.
The game was scheduled to take place after press time but check oldhamera.com for continuing coverage of the 8th Region tournament.
Colonels cruise 5-0 against Carroll County
Oldham County may have entered the 8th Region tournament on the wrong side of the bracket as a district championship loser but it didn't take them long to prove how talented they are.
Jason Karnell led the team with a hattrick, while Alvara Cerezal and Jonathan Heuerta added a goal each.
