Colonels raise rank

-A A +A
By Mickey Patterson

FRANKFORT – The late season charge by the Oldham County wrestling team continued at the state meet as the Colonels finished 11th in the state meet this weekend. “We did pretty good,” OCHS coach Aaron Riordan said. “I felt like we would get better as the year went on because we were so young, but it seemed like a lot of things just clicked for the guys as we got later in the season.” The Colonels had their best finish in recent years with just one senior, Trey Morlatt, who won two matches at 130 pounds. OCHS was led by junior Ichiro Chiba who was third at 215 pounds and Jeremy Bollman who was eighth at 140 pounds. Chiba lost his second match to Jacob Ilg of Newport by pin after leading by nine points at one juncture in the match. “He made a mental mistake and then got a little overexcited,” Riordan said. “He really should have won the match and had the guy on his back twice.” Chiba rebounded from the loss to take third, including a pin over defending state champion Derek Nickel of Doss who had beat Chiba twice during the regular season. Bollman ventured into unfamiliar territory in the state meet at 140 after having wrestled at 135 through much of the season. His highlight win came with a pin over Ricky Wright of Seneca who many considered a state title contender. “That was a huge win for him,” Riordan said. Riordan said he was pleased that every OCHS wrestler but two won at least one match in the meet. “That got us a lot of points,” Riordan said. “We had a match here or there where they could easily gone the other way and we could have been in the top eight or better.”SOHS The Dragons scored 68 points led by Houchens’ second place finish. Houchens had just three losses on the year, two coming to Jones, In the state finals, Houchens and Jones battled on even terms through the regulation finishing tied at four all. In the overtime, Jones, who held the No. 1 ranking through much of the year, scored the winning points on a takedown. “Ryan wrestled well, he did everything he could to win,” SOHS coach Steve Fiser said. “He got Jones into overtime. He (Jones)shot and got the takedown and we didn’t. That was the difference in the match.” Houchens, a junior, will likely be the favorite heading into next season. “Ryan has a couple of things to work on to get to that state champion level,” Fiser said. “We are going to start addressing them immediately because now is the time to correct those things if you want that title.” SOHS senior Cody Lasseigne closed his career strong as he took fourth in the state at 171 pounds. Lasseigne fell in the consolation finals 4-3 to Aaron Newsome of John Hardin. The Dragons also got good performances from middleweights Hunter Badon at 152 and Spencer Warren at 160. Badon won a couple of matches and Warren won three. “Those two guys did a nice job for us and got a little farther than we expected them to,” Fiser said. “The bottom line for us this year is we didn’t get it done across the board.” SOHS loses just three seniors in Lasseinge, Andrew Mitchell at 140 and heavyweight Curt McKinney. “We have the core of the team back, we just have to see how much work they want to put in now to get better,” Fiser said.NOHS It was a tough weekend for the young Mustangs as they failed in their quest to have a wrestler earn a medal. “It was pretty disappointing,” NOHS coach Robert Fulk said. “We are still looking for that one guy to break through for us so that when we go down we won’t be a little bit in awe of where we are.” NOHS senior Andre Zeppa, ranked No. 3 at 125, suffered a tough 9-6 loss to Gabe Supe of Scott in the second round to see his state title hopes dashed. “That was unfortunate for Andre,” Fulk said. “It was the classic case of having a bad match at the worst possible time.” There were bright spots for the Mustangs. Senior Chris Martorana won his first two matches at 145 while eighth-grader Chase Rusch won a pair of matches at 119. “Chase is the future of the team, he is a little stud,” Fulk said. “He is going to be a force to deal with in the state the next couple of years.” Like OCHS and SOHS, the Mustangs return most of the team intact including Taylor South who won three matches at 103 and Dan Thomson who won two at 135. “This year was fantastic over all for us and next year should be better with those guys back,” Fulk said.STATE WRESTLING TEAM RESULTS - Union County 202, Ryle 168, Woodford County 158, Trinity 157.5, Wayne County 149.5, Campbell County 130, John Hardin 123, Central 77, Sheldon Clark 76.5, Larue County 74.5, OCHS 71, Seneca 69.5, SOHS 68, Eastern 67, Harrison County 64, Bullitt Central 55, Central Hardin 53, North Hardin 52.5,Dunbar 52, Central 51, Lafayette 49.5, Fort Knox 47, Scott 44.5, Fern Creek 44, St. X 43.5.
