BUCKNER – The Oldham County High School wrestling team kept moving up the ladder Saturday as they won the team title at the Capitol City Classic in Frankfort.
“Last year we won a duals meet at Moore, but I think it has been around four years since we have won an invitational,” OCHS coach Aaron Riordan said. “The kids were excited. They wrestled really well.”
Thanks to three individual titles and a pair of second place finishes, the Colonels posted a team score of 194.5 points, well ahead of runner-up Henry Clay with 150 points.
Taking individual titles for the Colonels were Jeremy Bollman at 145-pounds, Ichiro Chiba at 215 and Tyler Kaelin at 112.
Chiba, ranked No. 2 in the state, continues to work his way back into wrestling shape from football and had one of his better meets.
“Every week he takes one more step forward,” Riordan said. “We’re hoping to get him peaking at the right time.”
Kaelin, a freshman, continues his upswing in the varsity ranks along with classmate TJ Schuyler who won second at 103.
“I think they might be the regional favorites right now,” Riordan said. “They both went undefeated at the regional duals and are looking very good.”
Also taking medals for the Colonels were Zach Talton, second at 152 pounds and senior Jeff Smith, third at 189. Jacob Miles was fourth at 160 pounds.
The South Oldham Dragon Invitational will start at 10 a.m. Saturday.
The meet is one of the strongest in the state and will hold that tradition this season with SOHS, OCHS and North Oldham all entered. Also coming in are No. 1 Trinity and top 10 teams Woodford County, Larue County, St. X and Ryle.
“It will be a meat grinder with those teams entered,” Riordan said.
