La Grange will negotiate with a man who purchased a home from the city as sold unlawfully by the city’s former mayor.
In December, George Richard Hall, a public works employee, bought a city-owned home on the 400 block of First Avenue from former La Grange Mayor Elsie Carter.
Carter sold the $85,000 home for less than 20 percent of its value, after learning that Hall had been living in a tent in Mac’s Lake.
Hall lived in the home rent-free, while making repairs to the property using supplies the city paid for.
The city said in February that Carter had not followed proper protocol to sell the house.
On April 26, La Grange City Council decided in a special meeting to enter good faith negotiations with Hall.
City officials hope to nullify the sale so Hall can acquire the home legally, and with a new deed.
Negotiations are pending.
