Sixteen teams competed in the Kentucky State Chess tournament over the weekend. Of the two teams sent by Oldham County Schools, they placed second and fourth. Held in Lexington, the “Sweet Sixteen” of chess is an invitation-only event. Locust Grove Elementary School placed second, while Centerfield Elementary finished fourth, which was a welcome reward for weekly practices and monthly matches that began in September. In addition, Locust Grove coach, Karmen Omar, was nominated as Coach of the Year. Above, the two Oldham schools went head-to-head in the tourney.
