LOUISVILLE – Finally finding a way to get just a point up, the South Oldham Lady Dragons pulled out a three-overtime marathon 51-48 road win over Holy Cross Monday.“It was a real cat and mouse game for four quarters,” SOHS coach Frank Wright said. “They were not going to come out of their zone and we kept the ball in our hands as much as possible trying to draw them out.”The Lady Dragons, managed to pick up their 10th straight win to go to 13-3 thanks to steady ballhandling and a big three-pointer in the final overtime from senior guard Lauren Jones that gave SOHS a lead Holy Cross finally could not match. There were heroes aplenty for the Lady Dragons. Center Amber Conniff hit a layup at the buzzer to send the game into overtime, Kristin Mabrey buried a pair of key free throws in the last overtime to compliment Jones’ three-pointer and senior guard Ally Byrd played 40 plus minutes of floor extending defense and ballhandling with just one turnover.“The girls did a really nice job,” Wright said. “A lot of people played a lot of minutes. Everybody was dragging at the end, but the kids had a twinkle in their eyes after it was over. It was sure good to see happy faces after a game like that.”Jones, who led the Lady Dragons with 22 points, came up with a big time assist to set up the first overtime when she drove to the foul line and drew a trio of Holy Cross defenders. Jones found the 6-foot-1 Conniff cutting along baseline with a pass right on the numbers and Conniff hit the layup to tie the game. Jones also had six rebounds and eight steals in the game.“They (Holy Cross) had the game won in regulation until Lauren made a great pass after they collapsed their defense on her,” Wright said. The scored stayed tied at 46 at the close of the first overtime as the Lady Dragons couldn’t gain any separation against Holy Cross’ sticky 2-3 and 3-2 zone defenses.Neither team scored in the second overtime as the Lady Dragons patiently held the ball trying in vain to draw Holy Cross out.SOHS finally managed to get ahead with the Jones three and the Mabrey free throws in the final overtime as Holy Cross failed to answer for the first time in over 40 minutes of play.“We faced a lot of on the road adversity and were able to persevere against a really good basketball team,” Wright said. “That’s something to be happy about.”SOHS - 13 8 9 12 4 0 5 51 - Lauren Jones 22, Amber Conniff 10, Kristin Mabrey 5, Jordann McGuffin 5, Ally Bird 3, Allison Reynolds 6, 51.HOLY CROSS - 12 8 14 8 4 0 2 48 - Schuler 21, Davis 11, Decker 3, Floyd 6, Lanham 4, Haines 3, 48.
