An Oldham County third-grade student has been selected as the statewide winner for the annual Reading Rainbow writing competition. Buckner Elementary’s Jordan Wells was surprised in her classroom May 9 with a presentation from Larry Moore at KET.Wells earned the honorary title of Reading Rainbow Young Writer and Illustrator after her poem was selected as the winner among all 245 third-grade entries statewide.“I’m really proud of myself for winning this award, but I was a little scared and embarrassed when all of these people came into my classroom,” Wells said of the surprise announcement. Her poem, entitled “Softball,” was accompanied by 12 illustrations and vivid descriptors of her love for the sport. Wells says her favorite position to play is third base. She, along with several of her classmates, entered their work into the Reading Rainbow competition after their teacher, Susan Vialpando, informed the class of the contest.Jordan’s parents are Keith and Dixie Wells, who were on hand for the surprise announcement.“She loves, loves, loves to write, loves to read,” Dixie Wells said. “I can remember coming back from a vacation to Georgia and we had to stop at Barnes & Noble in Tennessee to get her another book because she had already finished the ones she brought. She is always so creative.”Wells’ work will be on display on the KET Web site, and she received a certificate and a backpack filled with KET items for her first-place finish.
