Bruins get pair of big innings to win

Ballard High used a pair of big innings aided by Oldham County’s mistakes to be the Colonels 10-5 Tuesday.The Bruins scored six in the third inning and four more in the sixth to keep the Colonels at bay despite a pair of home runs from senior shortstop Josh Kovach.“The third inning went error, error, hit error, error, hit batter walk and hit and they got six runs out of it,” OCHS coach Scott Gerlach said. “You have to make the plays in the field against a team like Ballard.”Ballard broke open the scoreless game in the third with Doug Walker reaching second on an error and Pete Travisano reaching on an error. John Bloch made it 1-0 with a line shot double to left before Taylor Bugh reached on an error and Adam Gardenhire was hit by a pitch to load the bases.John Fidanza drew a four-pitch walk from Ian Andrews to make it 3-0 before Curtis McCombs doubled off the centerfield wall for a 5-0 lead.Nick Uhl scored the final run with a bloop single to center.The Colonels came right back with two runs when Chris Sims led off the third with a single up the middle followed by a home run to right fielf rom Travis Riggs.“Freshman single, freshman home run,” Gerlach said. “That kind of got us going.”The Colonels managed to cut the lead to 6-3 in the fourth when Kovach led off the inning with the first of his two homers, a solo shot to right field.
