Benita Bike's DanceArt Company Performance

Date:
02/11/2012 - 7:00pm - 9:00pm

The Oldham County Schools Arts Center is pleased to present a concert performance of Benita Bike’s DanceArt, a Los Angeles-based modern dance company, as part of OCSAC’s 2011-2012 Performing Arts Series on Saturday, February 11, 7:00pm, at Oldham County Schools Arts Center, 7105 Floydsburg Road, Crestwood, Kentucky. Tickets are $10 and free to students and OCBE employees. Benita’s work is being shown in Kentucky with the assistance of an ARC grant from the Center for Cultural Innovation.
Like a string quintet, the dancers of Benita Bike’s DanceArt perform with uncommon sensitivity to one another, bringing intense beauty and vibrancy to each delicately crafted, expressive movement. The company’s work is known for its elegant performance, dramatic use of space and gesture to make sensitive observations on life. Benita Bike’s choreography stands at the crossroads of past and present, blending the music and sensibilities of the past with evocative contemporary movement. For 30 seasons this company has performed near and far – from the California coast to New England and abroad – bringing both concert dance and unique interactive outreach performances to audiences large and small. See www.danceart.org for further company information.
The company’s program at Oldham County Schools Arts Center will include these dances: Southern Memories, Entrelazadas, Eternal Encounter, Aliens, and a new work yet unnamed:
• Southern Memories is a poignant and energetic trio taking its cue from traditional tunes of the Southern United States.
• Entrelazadas means "entwined" or "interlaced" in Spanish. This classical dance delicately traces the relationships of three women. The accompaniment is guitar and vocal music by Spanish composers Juan del Enzina, Gaspar Sanz, and Joaquin Rodrigo.
• Eternal Encounter is a fable with Good and Evil encountering one another repeatedly throughout time, creating unthinking hate, morphing into crazed battle, devastating lives, and solving absolutely nothing.
• Aliens is a fantasy work about a parallel world where a young creature learns about life.
• New Dance, a quintet which is various in mood and style, is set to guitar music by Lou Harrison.
