Oldham County Police offer safety tips for the holiday season

Shopping during the holiday season can present a unique danger. Taking a few prevention measurers can help keep your holiday season joyous.

The holiday season is a time when busy people can become careless and vulnerable to theft and other holiday crime. The Oldham County Police Department encourages citizens to be alert and cautions while shopping, especially during the holiday seasons. 

The following tips from the Oldham County Police Department can help you be more careful, prepared and aware during the holiday season.

• Shop in and around familiar areas that have security.

• Avoid shopping alone — if you do shop alone, let someone know your expected location and time of return.

• Know who you are dealing with (in person or via the phone or computer).

• Always protect your privacy.

• While online order only on a secure server.

• Guard your password.

• Teach your children to go to a store clerk or security guard and ask for help if they become separated in a store or a shopping mall.

• Immediately report suspicious persons and activities to the police.

• Carry a cell phone.

• Shop during the daytime, when possible.

• Be extra careful with purses and wallets. Carry a purse under your arm in front of you.  Keep your wallet in an inside jacket pocket or in a front pocket.

• Check your purses and wallet before leaving each store to prevent leaving items behind.

• Track your purchases.

• Limit the amount of cash that you carry.

• Keep receipts and Web site printouts. Check your statements against receipts to avoid fraud.

• Carry only the credit cards you’re going to use that day.

• Don’t wear a lot of jewelry or items that will attract attention from criminals.

• Park in well-lit areas when shopping at night.

• Shop with friends or family. Safety is in numbers.

• Keep your vehicle locked at all times and set your vehicle alarm.

• Never leave items in your vehicle that are visible to the public.

• Keep your hands free and avoid carrying an excessive number of packages. Have your vehicle key in hand and ready when walking to your car.

• Scan the area surrounding your vehicle both when you park and when you return to your vehicle. Visually check the back seat of your vehicle before opening the door and getting in.
