CRESTWOOD – After a week off with weather-related cancellations, the South Oldham Lady Dragons went back to the basics to beat Carroll County 42-37 Monday.

Going to the boards and adding a bit of extra toughness on defense in the second half, The Lady Dragons, 10-10 on the year, won their fourth straight game and sixth in their last seven tries.

“We beat a pretty good team,” SOHS coach Frank Wright said. “We didn’t have a great game, but a lot of it was what they didn’t allow us to do. I think both teams were a little bit rusty.”

After holding a 19-17 lead at the close of the first half, the Lady Dragons pushed the lead to seven points in the opening minutes of the third quarter behind guard Jordann McGuffin.

McGuffin scored eight of her team-high 10 points in the opening portion of the second half as SOHS built its lead. She also led the Lady Dragons with 12 rebounds, seven of which came on the offensive boads.

McGuffin also had four steals and did not commit a turnover.

“She was a lot more productive in the second half and helped us get that lead,” Wright said.

With Mary Dye and Vicki Bray grabbing five rebounds each, SOHS out rebounded Carroll County 33-19 and dominated both ends of the boards.

“That’s a big advantage for us and really enabled us to win,” Wright said. “We had 22 turnovers which really kept us from finishing them off.”

SOHS got a boost off the bench with freshmen Emily Housley and Lissa Gamsky coming to score eight points each.

Carroll County, fresh off finishing second in the Class A regional tournament to Gallatin County, was led by Lindsay Wallace with 15 points including three three-pointers.

Freshman Hannah Devine had 10 for the Lady Panthers, who fell to 15-7 on the year.

“We were not quite as efficient as we had been in our last few games,” Wright said. “A lot of it had to to do with the fact we were only able to practice twice the whole week, but I am sure it was the same for them. The important thing is we won.”
