I was born outside Cleveland, Ohio and grew up in Bay Village, 12 miles West of Cleveland, where Sam Shepherd was from. Our family had been in Ohio since the Van Cleves helped found the town of Dayton. My mother’s maiden name was Schmidt and her grandfather emigrated from Germany around WW1, but on her mother’s side, the family dates back to the 1600s. She descends from a Cole, as in Cole Hill, the first cemetery used by the Pilgrims in Plymouth Colony in New England. My dad’s family came from Londonderry, Ireland in 1720.
