LEXINGTON — Even as the deficit continued to mount, Coach Jason Holland saw opportunities.
Unfortunately for the Oldham County High School boys' basketball team, the Colonels couldn't take advantage of any, losing to Scott County 56-43 Saturday in the KHSAA Sweet 16 state tournament at Rupp Arena in Lexington.
While OCHS whittled down Scott County's 41-18 lead late in the third quarter, the Colonels had already missed what few windows they had open.
But senior forward Kerry Smith had one of his best games of the season.
Smith kept the Colonels in the game with a game-high 17 points, along with three rebounds and two steals.
"He likes playing that tempo," Holland said. "Kerry would probably do better in another program that plays fast, but he does a great job making people around him better.
In his post-game press conference, Cardinals Coach Billy Hicks said Smith and the Colonels forced more turnovers (22) than he can remember Scott County making all season.
The Cardinals will play Trinity at 6:30 tonight in the state championship.
