Name: Hayden Whitelaw.
School: North Oldham Middle School.
Parents: Christine and Grady Whitelaw.
Accomplishments: Whitelaw, a seventh-grader at North Oldham Middle School, has stepped into the varsity lineup for the North Oldham High School tennis team this year.
With the Mustangs hit hard by injuries, Whitelaw has been a consistent doubles player with several different partners and has shown marked improvement since the start of the season, the NOHS staff said.
He was a member of the varsity last season, but with the injuries was moved into the regular rotation this year.
An experienced summer tourney player who has been ranked as high as No. 13 in his regional age group, the move to the varsity has been a natural one.
“It’s been fun and I’m getting a lot of experience,” he said. “The hardest part is the lobs, sometimes they just go too high right over my head.”
Whitelaw started playing tennis on the courts at his house with his mom when he was 7 and the pair still hit together.
He said he wants to play on the team to his senior year and has grown to like doubles.
“I like singles, but I think doubles is more fun,” Whitelaw said. “I like having a partner.”
School: An A and B student, Whitelaw said social studies is his favorite subject.
“I like history so that makes it really fun,” Whitelaw said.
Other sports: Whitelaw is a member of the NOMS archery team and competes in tournaments for the school.
What the coach says: “Hayden is our only middle school regular on the varsity this year and has been a really good doubles player for us,” NOHS coach Todd Arterburn said. “He’s had several different partners and has played well with each of them.”
