Name: Cassie Axtell

School: Oldham County Middle School.

Age: 13.

Hometown: Crestwood.

History: Axtell started gymnastics at the age of eight after a friend in a dance class convinced her gymnastics was more fun. She began competing at the age of nine.

“My coach noticed I was able to do good things and was pretty good and asked me to move up to a higher level and start competing,” Axtell said.

At 10, Axtell won the overall Level III state title. She competes in the parallel bars, floor exercise, balance beam and vault for her club team, Champion Gymnastics of Louisville.

Axtell said her favorite discipline is the bars and the balance beam is her least favorite because it’s the hardest.

She practices four days a week including a five-hour workout on Saturdays.

Axtell competes in nine meets a year on a state and regional level.

Hobbies: Axtell likes to draw in her spare time.

Other activities: A straight A student, Axtell is a member of the OCMS student council. She also attended the Kentucky Youth Assembly with the school’s gifted and talented program and is a member of the Beta Club and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

What she likes best about gymnastics: “I like that all of my friends are there and it’s just kind of a fun place to be whether we are practicing or just hanging out,” Axtell said.
