Athlete of the week: Ben Lundy

-A A +A
By Mickey Patterson

School: Camden Station.

Sport: Tae Kwon Do.

Age: 8.

History: Lundy has been a student at the Kentucky Tae Kwon Do and Fitness Academy for a year. Lundy is part of a new group of young students at the academy that Master Sean Ramey thinks can help the school continue and expand on its long-standing tradition of placing high in local and national tournaments.

“He (Lundy) is a perfect example of how we teach for the long term here and how our kids accept that teaching,” Ramey said. “Some schools just do things in the short-term outlook to get their kids ready for this or that tournament. We take a long view of having them get better and better as they get older and gain experience in the sport and Ben has accepted that as well as anyone in our school.”

Hometown: Crestwood.

Accomplishments: At a regional tournament in St. Louis in June, Lundy, who has been competing for less than a year made his first big splash when he won gold medals in both fighting and forms and was the tournament’s MVP for his age-group.

What he likes best: “I like the working out,” Lundy said. “It’s fun to come to class and learn new things.”

What the coach says: “Ben is a great kid,” Ramey said. “First of all, for someone 8-years-old, he can take adult instructions as well as anyone I have ever been around. His concentration and focus on what he is doing at the moment is unbelievable.”
