Cross Country/Basketball: Jo Griffin
School: Crestwood Elementary.
History: In his first-year as a competitive runner, Griffin has emerged as a key element for the fledgling Crestwood team, which is making its first jump into competition this year with the other more established elementary programs in the county. At last week’s NOHS Rumble in the Jungle Run, Griffin ran 25th overall with a time of 8:45.95 over the 2,000 meter course.
Griffin is also one of the best junior basketball players in the county, playing up an age group for the highly regarded Big Sky Investigations team with his older brother, Mike.
Big Sky won several AAU and invitational tournaments around the metro area and state last year.
He was also a standout football player in the Oldham County Youth Football League before switching to cross country as his fall sport of preference.
Griffin comes from a well-known athletic families.
His dad, Jeff, led Oldham County High School to the Sweet 16 final four in 1985, was a first-team all-state player and member of the Kentucky All-Stars before going on to an All-American career at Transy.
His mom, Joni, is an avid recreational runner and helps coach the Crestwood team.
His uncles, Jim and Tim were both all-state basketball players at OCHS who played on Sweet 16 teams and both went on to play for national championship teams at Kentucky Wesleyan University.
What he likes best: “I like to compete and just to get out and run. It was pretty hard when I first started, but it gets easier every week.”
